Recall of The Princess and The Frog Pendants sold at Walmart
JUSTIN PRITCHARD, Associated Press Writer Justin Pritchard, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jan 29, 6:26 pm ET
The recall affects two products, about 55,000 items in total, sold exclusively by the world's biggest retailer for $5 each. The action was taken voluntarily by Rhode Island-based jewelry company FAF Inc., which did not respond to requests for comment.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which disclosed the recall, had been testing for cadmium in children's metal jewelry for several weeks in response to an Associated Press investigation that reported high levels of the known carcinogen in the Disney movie-themed pendants and other children's metal jewelry imported from China.
The Walt Disney Co. released a letter Friday it sent its vendors and licensees that sets a zero-tolerance policy for cadmium in any children's jewelry bearing its brand. That is far stricter than federal regulations, which not only don't require testing for cadmium in children's jewelry but also set no upper limit for how much a product can contain.
Disney is now requiring that all products be tested for cadmium, and that a detection means production and distribution of the product should be stopped.
"Any detectable levels of cadmium will be deemed a product failure," wrote Manuel G. Grace, Disney Co.'s senior vice president for product integrity.
In reaction to the AP's reporting earlier this month, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. had pulled three items from its shelves, including the two recalled Friday — a crown pendant with UPC number 72783367144 and a frog pendant with UPC number 72783367147.
The items had been on sale at Walmart stores since November, in conjunction with release of the animated movie. Consumers can return the two recalled items to any Walmart store for a refund or replacement product.
On Friday, Wal-Mart said in a statement that it continues to actively participate in the CPSC investigation, and pointed out that it had taken "swift action" when it removed the cited items on Jan. 11.
"The items are currently being tested to see how we can responsibly manage and destroy them, and they will not be offered for sale anywhere," the company said.
Two days after Wal-Mart pulled the items, the CPSC's chairman advised parents to throw away all pieces of inexpensive metal jewelry, noting that children who chew, suck on or swallow a bracelet charm or necklace may be endangering their health because cadmium or lead could leach out of the item and into the body. Cadmium that is ingested accumulates for years, potentially causing serious harm to the kidneys and bones. Recent research also suggests it can harm brain development in children.
Friday's recall marks the first time any consumer product has been recalled in the United States because of cadmium. To date, lead had been the focus — findings of high levels in jewelry and painted toys prompted a wave of recalls starting several years ago.
The CPSC said in a statement that there have been no reports of cadmium poisonings associated with the pendants but that its investigation into other pieces of jewelry "remains open and active."
The Fashion Jewelry Trade Association, which includes FAF among its members, released a statement that emphasized the industry's concern for safety but also suggested cadmium contamination is not widespread.
"We are confident in the safety of our members' products," said Michael Gale, executive director of the association. "Based on our members' own data, cadmium is not widely used as a substitute for lead in children's jewelry products."
As part of the AP's original investigation, lab tests conducted on 103 pieces of low-priced children's jewelry found 12 items with cadmium content above 10 percent of the total weight. One item consisted of 91 percent cadmium by weight.
Pendants from four "The Princess and The Frog" necklaces ranged between 25 and 35 percent cadmium, according to the testing.
Disney said in a statement at the time that test results provided by FAF showed the item complied with all applicable safety standards. But in the case of cadmium, unlike lead, there have been no specific levels that would automatically trigger health risks to children or a push for a recall.
As part of its investigation, the CPSC bought pieces of the jewelry cited in the AP reports, tested them in the agency's lab and found high levels as well. Based on the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, agency staff determined that the items posed a health risk to children, according to agency spokesman Scott Wolfson. The agency then approached FAF, which cooperated with the investigation and agreed to the recall.

Disney Cast Members Help “Hope for Haiti” Telethon
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA, Jan. 26, 2010 – Lending a helping hand through their expertise in guest service, approximately 400 Walt Disney World Cast Members volunteered to answer more than 16,000 calls for the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon and route donations to disaster relief organizations participating in the historic event. The benefit, which featured more than 100 of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, aired worldwide on major networks and cable outlets on Jan. 22 and raised more than $61 million for earthquake disaster relief.
“I feel like my heart is in Haiti,” said Wendy Richard, a Disney Cast Member who helped field calls and process donations for the global broadcast from the Disney Reservations Center in Orlando. Like thousands of Walt Disney World Cast Members, Richard has close personal ties to Haiti and has lost friends and family in the region. “Anything I can do to help from here, I really want to do it,” said Richard.
Accepting donations ranging from five dollars to $15,000, Cast Members kept their enthusiasm and energy up Friday night as the calls kept coming for more than two hours.
“Disney Cast Members are generous, compassionate and know how to rally when people are in need,” said Shannon McAleavey, senior vice president of Walt Disney World Resort Public Affairs, who noted that every donation was equally powerful and every dollar will make a difference.
Funds raised from “Hope for Haiti Now” will benefit The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF, the United Nations World Food Programme and Yele Haiti Foundation. Donations are still being accepted online at www.hopeforhaitinow.org.
Offering to help with the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon is one of many ways The Walt Disney Company and Disney Cast Members are extending their support to the people of Haiti. The Walt Disney Company has committed $100,000 in humanitarian aid through the Red Cross International Fund to support relief efforts and is working closely with Cast Members from Haiti to accommodate their needs during this difficult time. Cast Members also have the option to make direct contributions from their paychecks to the Red Cross Crisis Relief Fund.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Welcomes Gerenuk Calf to Herd: Baby Squirt
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Jan.6, 2009 -- Disney's Animal Kingdom recently welcomed its 28th gerenuk calf weighing in at eight pounds and approximately 1 ¾ feet tall, after a seven-month gestation.
The female calf, named Squirt, was born November 25 to her five-year-old mother Sushaunna, and nine-year-old father Jingle. This latest birth is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Gerenuk Population Management Plan.
A gerenuk, which in Somali means “giraffe-necked,” is an African antelope with a unique long neck allowing them to eat leaves off trees. Unlike other gazelles and most antelopes that graze on grasses, gerenuks often stand erect on their hind legs and stretch their long necks to browse on taller bushes. They are typically found in areas of dry, bushy shrub. Gerenuk are very well adapted to an arid habitat and do not need to drink much since they get enough water from the plants they eat. Most adult gerenuk reach approximately three feet at the shoulder and range in weight from between 80 to 115 pounds.
At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, guests can see gerenuk when they visit the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, a self-guided walking tour of native African wildlife. Pangani means "place of enchantment," and the exploration trail is an enchanting adventure into a lush, tropical forest and a verdant valley that are right out of the heart of Africa. In addition to gerenuk, animals Guests can find on the trail include gorillas, hippos, okapi, naked mole rats, meerkats and many species of exotic birds.

Twelve Days, Many Ways Disneyland Resort Gives Back During Holiday Season
The Disneyland Resort and its Cast Members give back to the community 365 days a year, but at no time is it more evident than during the 12 days of Christmas.
Cast Members join together to participate in toy and food drives, adopt families and send care packages to military servicemen and women – those efforts alone benefited more than 22,500 individuals this holiday season.
“The Disneyland Resort has a long history of giving back to the community, and the generosity of our Cast Members continues to amaze me,” said Disneyland Resort President George A. Kalogridis. “By contributing food, toys, clothes, time and energy, our Cast Members are creating special holiday memories both inside our Parks and beyond.”
Here are a dozen of the many ways that Disneyland Resort Cast Members give back to the community.
On the first day of Christmas…1,000 individuals receive necessities through the annual Adopt-A-Family program in partnership with MOMS Orange County.
On the second day…2,000 military care packages and postcards are sent to military personnel around the world through Operation Uplift.
On the third day…30 children at CHOC Children’s Hospital attended a holiday party hosted by Disney, and gift bags were provided to another 150 hospitalized children.
On the fourth day…4 food packing events at the Orange County Food Bank, including one on National Family Volunteer Day, provided more than 150,000 meals to individuals in need.
On the fifth day…$5,000 worth of Disney merchandise was donated by the Resort to support the Adopt-A-Family program.
On the sixth day…$6,000 was donated to the Irvine Animal Care Center, and during the Center’s holiday pet adoption event, Disney VoluntEARS helped 241 animals find a home.
On the seventh day…700 holiday Goofy hats were donated to five local nonprofit organizations including Boys & Girls Clubs and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
On the eighth day…800 gifts were wrapped by Disney VoluntEARS during the annual holiday gift wrap event, raising funds to send military care packages.
On the ninth day… 90+ Disneyland Resort Cast Members volunteered to host holiday parties at local nonprofit organizations, including Walnut Manor and the Blind Children’s Learning Center.
On the tenth day…10,000 toys were collected for the Toys for Tots Foundation through the Resort’s annual toy drive – a tradition that was started by Walt Disney 62 years ago.
On the eleventh day…11 food drop-off locations throughout the Resort resulted in a food drive that collected 2,100 pounds of food for families in need.
On the twelfth day of Christmas…more than $12 million in cash and in-kind goods will have been donated by the Disneyland Resort and its Cast Members in 2009.
The Disneyland Resort is proud of its commitment to the community, a legacy established by Walt Disney. The Resort focuses on three primary areas: children and their families, arts education and volunteerism.
